Questions remain after hours-long AT&T outage in SWLA

CALCASIEU PARISH, La. (KPLC) - AT&T fiber service is restored in Calcasieu Parish after an hours-long outage Tuesday. The carrier has offered few details about the disruption but says a cut fiber line was to blame.

The outage caused problems across the parish including at Calcasieu 911 where operators could not get calls from landlines.

If a similar outage happens again, Calcasieu 911 Director Richard McGuire says to have a landline and a cell phone if possible.

“There’s more than one way to call us from the house. We encourage everybody to have both a landline and a cell phone so if the cell phone network goes down you have a way you can still reach 911 in case there’s an emergency,” McGuire said.

McGuire said a landline allows 911 to pinpoint the caller’s address, while a cell phone may be less precise in locations like an apartment complex. He says consumers should learn as many alternate ways to communicate as possible, whether it’s borrowing a neighbor’s phone or having a better understanding of social media.

“Each one of these devices is a tool in your toolbox. The more you get used to working with these tools, the more you can alleviate something that happens in the future,” McGuire said.

As far as the cause of the outage, McGuire said AT&T informed him that there were two cuts to a fiber line. However, AT&T did not say where the fiber line was cut or what caused the damage.

“Both of our lines had been cut. They are on diverse routes. One goes along Interstate 10 to Lafayette and the other one goes along U.S. 171,” McGuire said.

McGuire said such incidents often result from someone digging where they are not cleared to dig.

Despite the frustrations people experienced, McGuire said Calcasieu 911 does not know of anyone hurt or injured because they were unable to get through to 911.

AT&T released the following statement regarding the outage:

“Service has been restored for customers in southwest Louisiana whose wireline and wireless services were disrupted due to a fiber cut. We apologize for the inconvenience.”
